Rowena I (Mulhume) Sketch
Rowena I. Sekich, 91, of Longmont passed away May 28, 2011 at Berthoud Living Center. She was born on June 1, 1919 in Longmont, Colorado, the first of 5 sisters, to William and Gertrude (Muhme) Combs. After the death of her father at age 7, Rowena was raised by her grandparents, Fred and Minnie Muhme, on a farm southeast of Mead.
Rowena graduated from Johnstown High School in 1937; she married Mike Sekich Jr. on November 20, 1938 in Frederick, Colorado. She and Mike farmed side by side on a farm east of Mead for 40 years and raised twelve children to adulthood. After moving to Longmont, she continued to be an active member of the Mead community.
Rowena was a homemaker, custom hay baler and also was a school bus driver for the St. Vrain Valley School District, retiring from the school system in 1982. She dearly loved her family, was a member of the Mead Altar Society and was an avid animal lover. She looked forward to coffee with her fellow bus drivers and seldom missed the weekly luncheons at the Mead Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mike in 1987, two sons (Alfred and Thomas) and two daughters (Marcia and Dorothy), one brother, five sisters and five grandchildren.
Rowena is survived by two sons: Bill Sekich and wife Sharon, Mike Sekich; eight daughters: Mary Jo Wierema and husband Lee Roy, Alice Klena and husband Dave, Donna Rogers, Shirley Mendez and husband Isidro, Kathy Makings, Mickie Ambrose and husband Phil, Barbara Sekich, and Nancy Mayer and husband Randy; a brother Fred Turner, a sister Beverly Morse and husband Don, twenty six grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and two sisters-in law.
Visitation will be 6 PM to 8 PM Tuesday May 31, 2011 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be Wednesday June 1, 2011, 10:30 AM at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, interment to follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Rowena Sekich Memorial Fund and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
